Clay Courts

Slow down the game and reduce injuries.

Soft courts are easier on players’ feet, backs and legs. Most tennis injuries and fatigue are caused by quick stops and starts rather than running or aerobics. Soft court surfaces provide some slide which allows for a transfer of energy to the surface when the player stops and reduces impact on the players’ joints. To a certain degree, the speed of the game can be altered by adjusting the maintenance procedures of the clay surface. For example, courts that are rolled very firm will play faster than courts that are rolled less frequently and brushed more. Drier courts will play faster than courts with more moisture. Overall, clay courts require more maintenance but significantly reduce players’ injuries and promote a more strategic game.

Har-Tru

HAR-TRU

Har-Tru is a natural green stone found in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia that is extremely hard and angular. These are two important qualities when it comes to constructing tennis courts. The angularity allows the crushed stone to lock together to form a stable playing surface while the hardness creates durability. Tennis players prefer Har-Tru because of the sliding surface (reducing injuries) and slowness of the ball (promoting a more strategic game).

HYDROCOURT SURFACE

HYDROCOURT SURFACE

HydroCourts are constructed with six individual water cells with each controlled by a separate water-filled control box. As the water level in the control box rises, so does the water level under the court. The amount of moisture in the court surface can easily be adjusted through the control box. The surface material is composed from the same green stone as a traditional Har-Tru court but the blend, called HydroBlend, differs to support the irrigation system.

PRO AUSSIECLAY® SURFACE

PRO AUSSIECLAY® SURFACE

Pro AussieClay® plays like a true clay court without all the maintenance. The synthetic fibers only require light grooming between play – no watering system necessary. We recommend Pro AussieClay® for those who are looking to reduce water usage/cost, don’t have a high budget for maintenance, and wanting a surface that plays like clay.

PROCLAY® SURFACE

PROCLAY® SURFACE

ProClay® is made for year-round use, indoors or outdoors, and playable shortly after a rain. People choose ProClay® because it incurs less downtime, watering, and maintenance, making the courts more readily available for teaching and play. ProClay® is excellent for converting existing courts as well as new construction.

Maintenance & Care

Care of clay courts requires daily maintenance to keep the playing surface uniformly compacted. Regular maintenance includes grooming, watering and rolling. Keep an eye out for algae growth, worn lines and a loss of surfacing material. We can help address any of those issues. Give us a call or shop our accessories catalog for a range of equipment to support single-court maintenance up to a USTA tournament-approved facility.

Shop Maintenance Equipment

In addition to maintaining the surface, we recommend courtside accessories to enhance your players’ experience. Provide shoe brushes and tennie toe steps so players can remove clay from their shoes after play. We also supply cabanas and benches, Tidy Court wastebaskets, water coolers and more.
