Rules & Equipment

WHO CAN PLAY?

Anyone! Pickleball is played either as doubles or singles. The same size playing area and rules are used for both singles and doubles.

THE BALL

Similar to a wiffle ball, the ball is plastic and perforated with anywhere from 26 to 40 holes. This creates more drag, slowing down the game making the ball easier to hit than a tennis ball.

THE SERVE

The ball is served underhand diagonally over the net into their opponent’s service court. The ball is then hit back and forth over the net until a player misses.

SCORING

Points are scored only by the serving team. The game ends once one team reaches 11 points, winning by 2.

THE PADDLE

Pickleball is played with a flat paddle made out of lightweight composite materials which has evolved from the original wooden paddle. Modern versions come in various sizes and thicknesses to accommodate different styles of play, but it cannot exceed 17” in length.

THE NET

The net is hung at the height of 34” and can be recreationally played using a tennis net.

THE KITCHEN

The kitchen or non-volley zone, which is 7 feet from the net on both sides, prohibits volleying.
